Driving Sustainable Urban Mobility Through Strategic Partnerships

Nairobi’s mobility challenges continue to grow as rapid urbanisation and increasing travel demand outpace the expansion of transport infrastructure. The result is persistent congestion, longer commute times, and reduced productivity.

Addressing these challenges calls for strategic planning, coordinated implementation, and strong institutional collaboration.

The Director General of the Public Private Partnerships Directorate (PPPD) Eng. Kefa Seda held a meeting with Dr. Silvester Kasuku, the Presidential Advisor on Governance in the Executive Office of the President, to discuss Nairobi’s urban transport system, with particular focus on the development of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network.

The meeting underscores the Government’s commitment to advancing sustainable solutions that will improve mobility within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. While numerous studies have identified viable interventions over the years, the priority now is to move from planning to implementation.

Delivering an integrated and efficient transport system will require close collaboration among government agencies, development partners, and the private sector to ensure projects are implemented in a coordinated and complementary manner.

Further, innovative financing mechanisms, including well-structured Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), will be instrumental in mobilising investment and expertise to deliver modern, resilient transport infrastructure that supports sustainable economic growth.

The engagement represents an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to transform Nairobi’s urban mobility. The discussions are expected to support the development of innovative and viable transport solutions that enhance connectivity, improve efficiency, and contribute to building a more resilient and liveable Nairobi.
