The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the Government of Kenya (GoK) have launched a transformative initiative to develop a state-of-the-art Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) project through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). This groundbreaking project seeks to deliver high-quality, secure, and affordable housing, significantly enhancing the student accommodation landscape in Nairobi.
The PBSA project is designed to address existing gaps in student housing by increasing capacity and providing modern amenities in a safe, secure, and environmentally sustainable environment. Its goal is to offer students a comfortable, convenient, and supportive living experience that enriches their overall university life.
The project will be developed on an approximately 14-acre site at Mamlaka, within the University of Nairobi grounds. Of this, 8.7 acres have been allocated for the proposed development. Strategically located within the university compound, the site offers convenient access to academic facilities and student amenities.
The project will feature around 4,000 student beds and state-of-the-art amenities, including recreational facilities, social spaces, and retail outlets that cater to students’ daily needs. Sustainability is a key focus, with the development incorporating green building features and prioritizing energy efficiency.
The Government of Kenya seeks to partner with qualified private sector parties capable of undertaking both the development and long-term facility management of the proposed project. The procurement process will be launched shortly. Interested private parties with proven technical expertise and financial capacity will be invited to express their interest and submit detailed proposals.
As part of the process, prospective partners will be expected to conduct comprehensive due diligence. They will also have the flexibility to optimize the overall layout and design of the project, provided that the final design adheres to the minimum standards and requirements for student accommodation and associated amenities as outlined in the project brief.
The PBSA project is poised to become a benchmark for student accommodation in Kenya, with its strategic location, state-of-the-art amenities, and green building features. The project’s success will not only address the current student accommodation challenges at the University but also contribute to the growth and development of Nairobi as a hub for education and innovation. By providing a world-class living and learning environment, the PBSA project will enhance the overall student experience. The project’s success will be a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing the pressing challenges of student housing in Nairobi and will set a new standard for student accommodation in Africa.
